Mussoorie's waterfalls are at their fullest from the monsoon through late autumn (July–November), and pleasant for a splash through summer. Here are the four worth planning around, with approximate distances from the Mall Road / Picture Palace end of town.
| Waterfall | Approx. distance from Mall Road | Approx. drive time | Known for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kempty Falls | ~15 km | 45–60 min | The famous one — tiered falls, bathing pools, ropeway |
| Bhatta Falls | ~7 km | 25–35 min | Quieter pools, picnic-friendly, short walk in |
| Jharipani Falls | ~8.5 km | ~30 min + short trek | Forest setting on the old Jharipani road |
| Mossy Fall | ~7 km | ~30 min | Moss-lined rocks, least commercial of the four |
Kempty Falls
The best-known waterfall in the region, on the Mussoorie–Yamunotri road. It's the most developed — changing rooms, food stalls, and a ropeway down to the pools — which also makes it the busiest; go before 10 am or on a weekday if you want the pools to yourself. Carry a change of clothes.
Bhatta Falls
Down the Dehradun road near Bhatta village, then a short approach from the parking. Smaller than Kempty but with calmer pools and far fewer crowds — a favourite with families for exactly that reason. Planning both in one loop? Bhatta and Kempty are on opposite sides of town — allow roughly 20–22 km and about an hour's drive between them.
Jharipani Falls
Near Jharipani village on the old route below Mussoorie, reached with a short walk from the road. Best just after the rains when the flow is strong; wear grippy shoes for the final stretch.
Mossy Fall
The closest thing to a secret on this list — a slim cascade over moss-covered rock on the Barlowganj side, about 7 km out. No stalls, no ropeway; just water, forest and the occasional photographer. Combine it with a Barlowganj–Jharipani loop.
