Hidden Gems In Mussoorie

The quiet side of the Queen of Hills — where to go once you've done Mall Road, curated by a family that has hosted Mussoorie's guests since 1989.

Landour's quiet lanes & Char Dukan

Twenty minutes uphill from Picture Palace and a century away in pace. The Landour loop passes deodar forest, colonial-era cottages and the four little eateries of Char Dukan — order the bun-omelette and ginger lemon honey tea like everyone in the know does.

Lal Tibba at sunrise

The highest viewpoint in the Mussoorie area (about 4–5 km from Kulri, above Landour). Most tourists come at midday; come at sunrise instead and you may have the Himalayan panorama — Banderpunch and its neighbours — almost to yourself.

Jabarkhet Nature Reserve

A ticketed, privately restored forest reserve about 7 km out on the Tehri road, with marked walking trails, wildflowers, and genuinely good chances of spotting Himalayan birds and the occasional marten. Go early; carry water.

Happy Valley & the Tibetan settlement

West of Library Chowk (about 3 km from Kulri): the IAS Academy slopes, Mussoorie's Tibetan community, a serene gompa and momos worth the walk. The Tibetan Market nearer Mall Road (10 minutes from the hotel) is the compact version if you're short on time.

Camel's Back Road at dawn

Everyone does it at sunset (and it earns its place on our sunset list) — but at 6 am it belongs to walkers, langurs and birdsong. The rock that gives the road its name is best made out in low morning light.

Mossy Fall

The least-visited of Mussoorie's waterfalls, moss-lined and quiet, about 7 km out past Barlowganj — details in our waterfalls guide.

Gardenica — our own hidden gem

We'd be lying if we left it out: Gardenica, the upcycled garden at Hotel Shiva Continental, grows out of old kettles, cracked shoes and forgotten buckets. Guests tend to find it before they find their rooms. It's free to wander, two minutes from Mall Road.

Getting around: Landour and Camel's Back are walkable from the hotel; Jabarkhet and Happy Valley are short taxi rides. Reception can arrange taxis and point you to the right trail for the season — distances above are approximate from the Kulri end of Mall Road.
